Home Visits

Dated: 31-Dec-15

At this time of year we receive an increase in the number of home visit requests and whilst we make every effort to accommodate these requests, may we remind patients that NHS practices should only carry out home visits for those patients who are housebound and have a clinical need.

Requests for a home visit should be phoned through to the Secretary before 10am and a Doctor will contact the patient (or family member) to assess the need and urgency of the visit. This could mean that, in some circumstances, it is better to call a 999 ambulance rather than have a home visit from a doctor.

In order that we can provide the best care for all our patients may we remind you that whilst we will continue to visit all patients who are truly housebound, we regrettably are unable to visit anyone who has requested a home visit for non-clinical reasons including:
  • Lack of transport to get to the surgery
  • Childcare issues
  • Bad weather
  • Caring of pets
If you are able to leave the house to attend other appointments (i.e. hairdressers, dentists, outpatients) or to go shopping, then you are not classed as housebound. We appreciate that it can sometimes be difficult to get to the surgery and we will be as flexible as possible with our appointments, but the NHS and our resources do not stretch to solving these difficulties for patients.

Please remember that attending the surgery means the problem can be dealt with more effectively, as the GP can carry out a more thorough examination or arrange any necessary investigation required.

We hope you will understand the reasons for this request, which is for the benefit of all our patients.
